Course FAQ's

How old do I need to be to take this course?

You must be 18 years or older to enrol in the Level 2 Personal Alcohol Licence course, as this is the minimum legal age to hold a Personal Alcohol Licence in the UK.

When can I start the course?

You can start immediately after purchase. There’s no need to wait.

How is the course structured?

The course content is split into individual sections, with each section concluding in an end-of-section assessment. All sections and assessments must be completed to start the regulated exam.

How do I take the regulated exam?

After completing all course modules, your Laser Awards account login details will be emailed to you within a few days after completing your course. Check both your inbox and junk folder. We send them as quickly as possible, so you won’t be waiting long. Use these details to access the secure online exam platform.

Before starting the exam, make sure you have:

  • Valid photographic ID (passport, driving licence, or provisional licence) to show at the start.

  • A quiet, private space free from interruptions.

  • A stable internet connection, ideally on a desktop or laptop.

  • Webcam and microphone switched on for the entire duration of the exam.

  • At least 60 minutes of uninterrupted time.

Once you start, the exam cannot be paused or restarted.

What ID do I need?

You must have a valid photo ID, such as a passport, driving licence, or provisional licence, to verify your identity before starting the exam.

Can I use my notes during the exam?

No — this is a closed-book exam. You can, however, revise as much as you like beforehand using the course content.

What if I fail the exam?

You will have one attempt at this regulated exam. If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam for a £22 re-sit fee, as set by Laser Awards.

What happens when I have passed the regulated exam?

Once you complete your regulated exam and pass, you will receive your official qualification certificate from Laser Awards, which is an Ofqual-regulated awarding body.

After this:

  1. Apply for your Personal Alcohol Licence with your local licensing authority (usually your local council).

  2. Submit the required documents with your application:

    • Your regulated qualification certificate

    • A Basic DBS (criminal record) check dated within the last 28 days

    • Two passport-style photographs, one endorsed as a true likeness

    • A completed personal licence application form and disclosure of convictions declaration

  3. Pay the application fee, currently £37 (may vary slightly depending on your council).

Once your application is approved, you will receive your Personal Alcohol Licence, allowing you to legally sell or authorise the sale of alcohol in the UK.

How long is the certificate valid?

Your Level 2 Personal Alcohol Licence qualification certificate does not expire, so you do not need to retake the course. However, to legally sell or authorise the sale of alcohol, you must ensure your Personal Alcohol Licence issued by your local council remains valid and up to date.
