Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, the sugar that is found in milk and dairy products. Lactose intolerance is caused by a shortage of lactase in the body. Lactase is an enzyme produced by the small intestine. For most people, lactose intolerance develops over time as the body produces less lactase. Lactose intolerance is most likely to be age related and occurs mostly with advancing age.
While lactose intolerance is not dangerous, its symptoms can be distressing. The signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance usually begin from 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking foods that contain lactose.
The symptoms are:
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea, sometimes vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Bloating
- Flatulence
None of these present a serious health risk and symptoms will usually disappear within an hour.
If you have an allergy to milk, or are generally lactose intolerant, and you experience any symptoms after consuming the M&S Belgian Dark Chocolate bar you should seek professional medical advice from a doctor.
