Handwashing is one of the simplest ways to stop the spread of germs, but studies show that even with good intentions, we often miss key areas on our hands.
Some of the most commonly overlooked spots include the:
- backs of the hands
- thumbs
- fingertips
- areas between the fingers
- wrists
These spots are often missed because people focus primarily on the palms. However, bacteria and viruses can thrive in these other hidden areas, making thorough hand-washing essential for proper hygiene, especially when preparing food, or if you’re involved in any medical profession.
When people think about hand washing, they often forget that it should also include the wrists. the wrists can easily come into contact with food, and can act as a contaminant, transferring pathogens, if they’ve been forgotten during handwashing.
Why These Areas Are Missed?
The missed spots tend to be areas where we naturally have more creases or where skin touches other skin, like between the fingers and around the thumbs. Effective handwashing includes scrubbing every part of the hand for at least 20 seconds, covering these often-neglected areas. Following a structured approach, like the WHO’s recommended handwashing technique, can help ensure all areas are covered.
Below is an image showing in red the areas that are most often forgotten.
How to easily remember to wash your hands properly
To remember washing the essential parts of your hands, try the “TIP-TOP” method:
- Thumbs – Don’t skip them! Thumbs often get missed but gather a lot of germs.
- In between spaces – Those areas between your fingers are bacteria favorites.
- Palms – Rub them thoroughly to reach all creases.
- Tips of fingers – Scrub fingertips and nails by rubbing them against your palm or using a nail scrubber
- Outer parts – Sides and back of your hands deserve attention too.
- Pulse point (wrists) – A quick rub up to your wrists completes the clean.
Using “TIP-TOP” can help ensure that all the main spots get the care they need!
